This summer, my family and I embarked on a long-awaited trip to Kenya. As a family of four, we'd been discussing this adventure for seven years. With my son starting year 10, we decided it was the perfect time to make it happen… …and Kenya did not disappoint. Our experiences were unforgettable, creating memories and stories that we will never forget.
Malaria tablets!
One aspect of our trip that initially seemed daunting was the daily malaria tablets. We had to take them for nearly a month – a week before the trip, during the holiday itself, and another week afterward. These pills were not the most pleasant to take, especially given the excitement and adventures we were experiencing, we were likely to forget.
So we came up with a plan…we gamified the problem! We started a friendly competition where each family member who remembered to remind us all to take our tablets at dinner each day would earn a point. The winner would receive...well, the satisfaction of winning! While not a substantial prize, it proved to be a surprisingly effective motivator.
This lighthearted competition worked wonders. I would have certainly forgotten to take my pills on most days if not for the reminder from one of my family. Each evening at dinner, someone would inevitably declare that we’d all forgotten to bring the tablets along, but one of the family would have picked them up and would be smiling with pride!
Nice story Dan, but why are you sharing this with us?
While this may seem like a trivial anecdote, I believe it highlights the power that teamwork has. When we work together toward a common goal, even the smallest tasks can become more enjoyable and fulfilling. Gamification, when applied thoughtfully, can be a fun and effective way to motivate individuals and teams to accomplish tasks, both big and small.
